Machinists prevail on Opening Day

On opening day for the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball 2016 campaign,The Emmett Machinists of Knoxville wielded some accurate willows against a strong Phoenix of East Nashville club.

Playing their first home match of the season at Historic Ramsey House, the Machinists pounded out 31 hits en route to a 15 to 7 victory over their East Nashville counterparts. Mongo led the charge with 4 hits including a double. Colonel, Masher, Baby Bird and Doc each tallied 2 aces.

The Machinists would like to thank Phoenix for making the journey across the plateau and for being fine gentlemen and outstanding ballists. We also wish Phoenix captain Snookie Roy a speedy recovery on his injury.

The Emmett Machinists of Knoxville have issued a match challenge to the Nashville Maroons. The proposal has been agreed upon by Maroon captains Peach and Schoolboy. The game will be played at Historic Ramsey House on the 23rd of April at 2:30 local time.

Mountain City climbs Knoxville 11-3

It was a beautiful day for the start of the vintage base ball season. The sun was high and bright with clear skies, giving promise of warm days ahead. There was still a bite in the cool spring air with a game time temperature of 52 degrees.

MountainCityVBBC won the bat toss and took their defensive positions. The big willows of the Holstons showed up in the first inning and tallied two aces. MC then took to the dish and somehow managed to score 5 aces in the bottom of the first. Both teams showed some rust and first match jitters.

The remainder of the match was a defensive battle. For the Holstons, Sampson covered center and left field with ease and Cannonball was a blockade at the 3rd sack. Sour Mash and Sampson hit the onion well and put runners in scoring position several times.  They had one ace in the 2nd inning, however the Holstons would cease to tally another ace the rest of the match

For MC, Taco in left field, Sweet Feet in center, and Mighty Bandit at short stop continuously made great defensive plays. Including a beautiful 6/3 double play by Bandit and Cowbell.  At the dish, Taco, Bandit, Pepper and Sweet Feet all had a great showing. MC was able to slip in a few more aces later in the match for a final score of 11-3 in favor of the Mountain City club. Taco was awarded the game ball.

While taking part in a series of exhibition matches at Gettysburg with the Hog & Hominy Picked 9, our own Jay “Udder Guy” Kauflie caught the eye of Washington Post reporter/photographer Matt McClain. “Udder Guy” featured in several of the pix accompanying an article about the exhibition. Phoenix Unable to Hold On vs. Farriers

Despite an early lead under threatening skies, your loyal Phoenix were unable to hold off the talented Franklin Farriers on Sunday at Carnton Plantation, finally falling 16-12. A 10-man East Nashville squad fought valiantly throughout, succumbling only scant minutes before the terrible storms lashed Middle Tennessee. A tip of our (wet) caps to the Farriers and to all the cranks who braved the elements to join us – Huzzah!
